UNY Story Tank at City of Water Day July 24

The Mary A. Whalen

Come aboard with PortSide and the Mary Whalen to share your own stories from the deep in our

City of Water Day Story Tank

Saturday, July 24, 10 am – 4 pm

We’ll set up a table with our recording equipment – the “Story Tank” – on Pier 11 beside PortSide‘s tanker Mary Whalen, docked in Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. Come tour the tanker, take in the watery festivities, and share your own true stories of water: fish stories, skinny dips, canoe trips, seasickness, ferry rides, waterfront walks, sunset cruises, boat-bound breakups, secrets you’ve shouted to the open ocean, secrets you’ve tossed in a polluted canal – anything goes, we’re just looking for your stories or memories about water!

Directions to Pier 11 Atlantic Basin, Red Hook:

Atlantic Basin can be accessed by mass transit, or by car. Entrances to Atlantic Basin are at Pioneer St & Conover Street (for walkers) or Bowne St & Imlay St (for cars). The Mary Whalen will be docked at Pier 11, next to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. For detailed directions by car, subway, bike, or bus, please follow this link, which opens as a PDF.

Other activities at Pier 11 will include:

  • Tours of the Tanker Mary A. Whalen
  • Tours of the steamship Lilac, a lighthouse tender
  • Us Customs marine security display including a container scanning machine
  • The Urban Divers EnviroMedia mobile marine museum
  • Local Brooklyn food vendors
  • Live Music
  • Booksellers
  • Waterfront artist Christina Sun

We’re looking for volunteers to help out that day, too! Email us if you’re interested underwaternewyork at gmail dot com

More details soon, but visit the City of Water Day web site to learn more about city-wide waterfront activities – and then come to Pier 11 !
