Friday, March 5

5:30 – 7:30 pm

American Folk Art Museum, 45 W 53rd St, between 5th and 6th Avenues

Nineteenth century maritime painter Thomas Chambers was not only inspired by real NYC disasters like the wreck of the Bristol, in which some sixty passengers perished within sight of Rockaway Beach, but also by ill-fated vessels in works of literature. In conjunction with a Thomas Chambers show at the American Folk Art Museum, we asked you to do the opposite, drawing inspiration from Chambers’ paintings, as well as other NYC shipwrecks, for our Shipwreck Story Contest. Submissions have been pouring in, and on March 5th, the winning entry will be debuted at UNY’s evening of Shipwreck Stories at the American Folk Art Museum’s Free Music Friday.

Other event highlights will include:

Readings by

Sara Weiss

Claire Shefchik

David Hollander

the shipwreck-themed song stylings of

Lindsay Sullivan and the Sailors

Richard McGraw

and a performance by Aaron Diskin (Golem / Lycaon Pictus) and Annette Kogan (Golem) of an original musical fragment by Ben Greenman (Editor at The New Yorker, author of several books of fiction including the novel Please Step Back).

Please join us on March 5th from 5:30 to 7:30 at the American Folk Art Museum to celebrate our winning contest entry, the closing of the wonderful Chambers show, the talent of our writers and musicians and the outrageous pairing of Ben’s lyrics with Aaron’s musical performance (which may or may not involve an accordion!).
